When and why?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a shred party \nhappens to spring up in your area, you may want to mark your calendar. \nFor many years, shred parties, where a business or organization hosts \nclients or the public to the use of giant paper\n shredders, have presented a fun and easy way for folks to rid \nthemselves of paper clutter. Sometimes, it\u2019s more than just paper, as \nsome industrial-sized shredders even have the ability to destroy hard \ndrives and other electronic storage devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protection from identity theft.\n<\/strong>Of course, this is not just \nabout clutter: old bills and financial documents are just the sorts of \nthings that scammers and identity thieves want to get their hands on. \nThe only way to be totally certain that you are\n safe is the total destruction of those documents and devices once their\n practical use has come to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A shred party can \nalso be a nice day out. It\u2019s not unusual for the big shredding trucks to\n be parked outside on a pleasant spring or summer day. Depending on the \nhosting organization, the shred party might\n be attached to some other activity, like a potluck, barbecue, or \ncommunity celebration.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do you bring?<\/strong>  The better question may be: when is it wise to let go of the documents  that you\u2019ve been storing? It\u2019s important to be sure because they  certainly  aren\u2019t something you can get back from the shredder once they\u2019re gone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nA recent article from CBS News suggests the following guidelines:\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For your tax returns, hold on to those for up to seven years. <\/li><li>Purchase and sale statements for your house, for your entire ownership of the house. <\/li><li>Utility bills, at least one year. <\/li><li>Statements from your investment or brokerage account, at least one year. <\/li><li>Purchase and sales confirmations related to your investment or brokerage account, at least one year. <\/li><li>Statements from your bank account, at least one year.<\/li><li>Statements from your credit card provider, at least one year. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\nIt\u2019s important to  remember, also, that the above represents a general \nguideline; different  sources offer different suggestions. CBS \nacknowledges that, in some  cases, it\u2019s okay to shred your tax returns \nafter  three years. \n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What should you get rid of and hold on to?
